Hello everyone, My name is Paul and I recently purchased an acreage. My kids are very excited to start raising chickens. We are going to try to do the process from egg to chicken instead of purchasing chicks. We have tons of questions and are grateful for great resources such as this site.

Welcome to BYC, Paul! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.
Congrats on your property that you've just bought! Good luck with all your goals and projects!

Good for you wanting to start with eggs! That is a fun experience and very rewarding in the end. However, it is also quite challenging, ESPECIALLY for a beginner. I originally wanted to start with eggs as well. My grandma talked me out of it. She told me that buying chicks fro a hatchery or feed store is a MUCH better choice. Boy, was she right! The chicks were young enough that they still tamed very easily. Now that they are grown, they sit on my lap, eat from my hand, follow me around and let me pet them. Hatching is very difficult. You have to have the temperature, humidity levels and turner working JUST right in order for the chicks to form properly. All this discouraged me from hatching my own since I had had no previous experience.

Don't get me wrong, hatching is a WONDERFUL experience and if you and your kids have decided on it, then have fun!

Raising chickens from eggs does seem to be challenging from the research I have done but I think I am up to the challenge. I may buy a few chicks just in case it doesn't work out. Thanks for your support.

Hi Paul, welcome to BYC!

How ever you get your flock started, eggs or chicks, you're going to have a lot of fun. Congratulations on getting your new place and having room for a backyard flock!

Nice to have you here, make yourself at home!
