Hi Folks,
I have just raised Buffs and dark Brahmas from day old chicks - they are now 5 months old. Also ordered some Wyandottes from Paul's Poultry which will be arriving in May. I had RIR's many decades ago and now am able to enjoy chickens again so I'm very excited! One of my Buff girls has become a silly pet. She just insists on human contact and I'm happy to oblige. Every morning she has to hop up on the little table and inspect how I am mixing their veggies and sprouts. I'll try to get a photo soon. A local carpenter is building us a coop. I raised the chicks in my greenhouse and then moved them to a temporary pen and coop (cardboard box on a table covered by a tarp). I'll be so glad to get a working coop - also need to get the girls out of my fenced veggie garden so I can plant my veggies! They have decimated the last of my winter crop of greens but that is okay, everything was bolting. I turn some ground in my raised beds for them every day so they can de-grub it. I love the mannerisms of chickens and everyone in the family is charmed by them.
We live on 14 gorgeous acres bordered by a large creek with about half our land in hardwoods. I'm a huge perennial gardener so I'm outside for several hours a day working on my gardens. I have a huge meadow for my chickens to free range when they need to be big enough. I've been training my 2 Dobermans to leave the chickens alone which is not too hard because I have English Budgies in the house and they are used to birds as part of our overall "pack". I'm looking forward to learning lots on this great forum!
