All,

I'm a new member that is wanting to learn all I can on raising chickens. I don't have any yet, but hopefully will soon. I'm looking at raising both layers and meat birds and hopefully somewhat-free range (Somewhat because they will have fencing around them to protect from predators) in a movable chicken coop. I've been reading books about them and would like some more info on the best ones for the Texas climate. HEAT!!! is the name of the game down here. Any opinions?

Thanks

Brad

Hello there! I am in Ohio, so I worry more about cold tolerance, but I have a friend in this area who lost a couple birds due to heat this year. She had several breeds, and the ones she lost were all Buff Orpingtons. Not sure if this was just bad luck of if they truly are heat intolerant, but these were the only ones she lost. Might want to stay away from those, but not sure what breed to recommend to you. Anyway, welcome to BYC and good luck! At least you are on the right track planning before you acquire your birds.

Thanks to all who have replied so fast.

And I just read some of the questions for new members so I'm going answer those in this thread

1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

New- No chickens yet

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

NA

(3) What breeds do you have?

NA

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?

NA

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

American Legion (Sergeant at Arms), American Legion Riders (motorcycle club) (PGR) Cubmaster of a local Cub Scout Pack, spending time outdoors with my family

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

Family- I have three kids ranging from 8 to 17, Youngest two are homeschooled and the oldest will be going to college this next year to take the last three classes for high school and take the rest as regular college credits, Awesome wife, and currently we have two dogs (German Shepard mix and a yorkie/Shih Tzu and a rabbit. Occupation is a recovering laid off Senior Logistics Supervisor working for a telecom company. Goal is to buy at least 5 acres by the summer time and start raising chickens, turkeys, some other birds, sheep, pigs and some crops. I've always wanted a farm/ranch and being laid off back a year or so ago, scared the crap out of me in the possibility of not being able to provide for my family. We made it through, but it was hairy so that is one big reason to raise our own food and I'll be asking lots of questions.
