Hi! Have checked out this site several times in the past couple years, but am just now getting around to registering.

I was not raised on a farm. I am a nature / animal-lover and got into raising chickens a couple years ago on a whim. I live in a city where it is still against code for some stupid reason but I just have a few hens and my immediate neighbors don't mind them at all. They throw corn cobs & watermelon wedges (barely eaten on) over them fence to my girls all the time. I had one grumpy person that doesn't even live on my street call animal control on me several times, but when they came out they saw how well-cared-for and inoffensive my spoiled gals are and I explained all my food allergies and chemical sensitivities to them. They told me to write something up explaining it and get a letter from my doctor and they would attach it to my file and let me apply for a special variance if necessary.

I had also already requested a copy of the complaint which had the home phone number of the caller listed. I quickly reversed the number to get the person's name & address. When I went to go ask her what was bothering her and explain my situation, she never came to the door for some reason despite obviously being home since her front door was wide open & only the screen door shut. (Don't you just love people who are only brave when they think they are anonymously hiding behind a phone line?

Anyway I currently have 3 hens: Smarty my 2 yo buff Ameruacana, Stella my 2 yo Australorp, and Pumpkin my 1 yo (orange?) Ameruacana. (Actually I am not sure if they are technically Ameruacanas or Easter eggers.) Anyway, we have had many "adventures" and I have learned a lot along the way and continue to everyday. Smarty recently went broody on me but obviously without a rooster, none of my eggs were going to hatch, so I got 6 Black Copper Maran eggs from my BF who has a nice flock of pure, good blood line BCMs and swapped out eggs on her, so hopefully on Palm Sunday I will be hearing the peeping of baby chicks

, as long as she continues to stay with her bum on them!

Wish us luck!!

I also had Coturnix quail for a while, but ended up giving them all to my BF. Currently I am on a mission to figure out the most humane ways to quickly dispatch chickens & quail for us. If anyone could please direct me to some good links, I would greatly appreciate it! I am very excited to finally be officially on here now & look forward to getting to know some great people! Thanks!!

Hello & welcome! I'm also from the northern part of the state! You will find lots of good people here. Go to the "Indiana Chickesnstock" thread under swap & shows.
