Hi, I have 4 aged hens, all of good character (mostly) and we have a cat who likes to help feed the hens but runs off once the hens start stampeding towards him!
The hens don't have official names but some have a different ring or piece of coloured string around one leg, so green ring, green string, black string and the skittery one! Green ring is about 4 years old now and the other 3 are close to 2 years. I have feeling that green ring is not laying as we have been getting 3 eggs a day at the peak of the laying season.
We live in a rural town and rules about hens is no more than 10 and NO roosters!
We enjoy our organic eggs when we get them and feed our hens on vegetable peelings, leftover curries, garden weeds and meat scraps, plus wheat and hen pellets! They did not like the seaweed, and they live in a well made hen house with a large corner of the section run which is surrounded by hedge, the back of the tin garage, and a short wooden fence. The hens are occasionally allowed out to scratch under the trees and invariably dig in the vege garden!
