Hi fellow chicken lovers! I'm Lou. I received my baby chicks on Nov. 13th. BYC has been a wealth of info in getting me started on the right foot. I found BYC while surfing and dreaming about getting some chicks.
I ordered 12 Buff Orpington Pullets as I really want eggs, some compost and something to get rid of some bugs on the property. Well, I also received 6 (of what appear to be) Barred Rock roosters as "packing material" to keep my pullets warm during shipment. (some joke, ha, ha) I didn't want any roosters!
So far I have only lost one chick, it was one of the roosters. He was just weak, I think.
I have had 25 laying hens in the past but had to move and had to get rid of them. I am now once again on acerage and begged my hubby into just letting me have a few chickens again.
Fortunately I have a 12'x8' Handy House greenhouse that I am keeping the chicks in with a cardboard brooder box . It seems to be working well.
I love chickens and all their antics, they are for me a true source of joy! Nothing like a good game of what I call chicken football, when you take a tasty treat to them and they run all over the place trying to steal goodies from each other.
By the way, what do you get get when you cross a buff orpington with a barred rock?
Looking forward to more chicken fun in the future,
Lou
