Hey everyone,

We are Jessie, Peter and Ryan and we live in Slab City. We have been here for about 5 years and in that time have built a “botanical art palace” full of gardens, a pond and plenty of art. Our camp is called RabbitSide and you can find us on YouTube or Instagram.

We also rescue animals out here are and the folks that everyone brings the injured doves they found.

We have amassed a small flock of chickens and ducks through rescuing them from other people in the area who can’t keep them cool during the ~120 degree F summers or who free range them here, which is a death sentence due to a high number of roaming dogs.

We currently have about 20 chickens and 8 Pekin/Rouen ducks. We also have 4 dogs and 4 cats (all but one are rescued from Slab City) and up until recently, we were also a tortoise sanctuary for unwanted/abandoned pet tortoises in the area. We’ve had a total of 16 tortoises here over the years.

We are gearing up to leave the area in a couple months and have found new homes for the tortoises already, so now we just have dogs, cats, chickens and ducks! (The dogs and cats come with us when we move, the birds will need new homes).

We have been lurkers on this site in the past but have finally joined! We hope to access this community of knowledgeable chicken lovers and be even better keepers because of it. Thanks for having us and we are looking forward to having some great conversations here!

Hi, my name is Jatina. I am a single mother living in a camper. I would love to take care of your chickens when you move. Is it possible to leave them there in their habitat and come live there with them, so they wouldn't have to be moved. You can contact me. I will be waiting to hear back from you, thank you.
