Hello! Welcome to BYC! :welcome

What types of chickens do you own or are looking to own?

There are many options for feed and bedding depending on your budget and flock needs. I recommend at least a 16% protein feed for pullets and laying hens. Then you can always mix things like chopped corn, scratch, sunflower seeds, and give treats like mealworms. Just make sure if you mix the feed to keep it at a 16% protein level because once you mix with other things it lowers the amount of protein. We buy from our local feed mill. They have great prices and fresh feed. I also like the brand Nutrena.

As far as bedding, this depends again on what you prefer. A lot of people use pine shavings, hemp bedding, or straw. Some people use things like sand or mulch. This depends on your needs and wants and figuring out what works best for you and your flock.

Hope this helps! :)

I’m not sure on the breed. I am getting them from my husbands coworker who has a small ranch. They’re one year old laying hens is all I’ve got 🤣.
I have read a lot of good things about ā€œSmall Pet Select Chicken Layer Feedā€ but looking for any recommendations. My husband is only letting me get four chickens to start (hahaha) so cost really isn’t that big of an issue.
As far as bedding for our coop, I’m leaning towards sand/wood pellets mix. But again not sure what would work best for a place that’s cold at night/day about seven months out of the year.
thank you so much for your response and time!
