Hello,
I'm a new member here. I've joined to learn what I don't know yet and teach/ help guide with my experience
with chickens in my area which is a warm/ hot area.
My experience;
Raised on a farm with my father, who is Portuguese, on a small island called Curacao (on the North Coast of Venezuela and East of Aruba. We used to farm Egg Layers the brown ones ( can't remember/ know the Breed, I guess it was Isa Browns), and some other "Local Chicken", Black, and Colorful roosters. This was when I was 2-8 Years old.
Last year I started again with Chicken Farm, besides Agriculture. I've started with 10 Brown Layer Chicks and 10 White broilers. I've Googled and YouTubed as well and learned (again) very quickly the How to's.
These were day-old chicks btw. locally bought from a pet shop which imported them.
Of the 10 Layer chicks, 8 Survived until now and they are healthy hens laying. I see I've done a great job since when I see other local hens, the same breed, they are eg. missing a lot of feathers, etc. while ours are fat, big, full of feathers, their combs are "Red" and seems healthy straight up. Also the Yolk is more orange compared to other egg layers (customer reviews).
From the 10 Broilers, 2 died as well. Those were eating a lot and we put them free with other free Chicken in the Wild.
After this, we got 50 more chicks' brown Layers in Febr. this year. None died until yesterday. We fed them temporarily with Layers feed (Not fully Organic). This morning another one died so 2 died. We Change the feed to some organic and will add Wheat Rice. I've Google quickly and got to know that Layers feed is fatal for Chicks grower stage and of course starter because of the amount of calcium, it can or will damage their digestive system, kidneys, etc. but, one or the other way lesson learned. The pet shops had no feed for growers and so to wait one week until they received Grower's stage feed, I thought let me just give them since nothing will also kill them from hunger. Something is better than nothing and resulted fatal for the 2 chicks so far.
I've learned my lesson and now for the time being while the petshops getting their stuff together, will be feeding them cooked brown rice mixed with a bit of the organic feed we prepared (Sun Flower, Corn, Pumpkin Seed, Barley,...) cause I can't let them starve 2 death.
I'm also looking into buying FERTILIZED EGGS from different breeds of chicken. if anyone knows a Website/ Serious person from all over the World willing to sell, I'm ready to link.
We are on Social media btw. Facebook --> Microfarmingsxm, Tiktok as well, and Youtube. Just started.
I hope you have had a great time reading about my experience.
