Hello BYC - I've been lurking/reading/researching for a couple of weeks. Our municipality is a part of Greater Victoria, but each of the 13 municipalities have their own bylaws regarding backyard chickens. We lucked out that a few years ago someone fought for change, and we are allowed up to 4 hens (no roosters) on our property (over 5000sqft).

Similar to Craigslist, we have a great website called UsedVictoria.com - and someone was downsizing her flock so I got 2 x18month laying hens for free - she even started me out with some feed and where to get it. I didn't think to ask her what breed they were - I just wanted to start out with established layers until I could see how we did with them. I converted a garden bench for their coop "for now" and picked up a raised bunny hutch (again for free from usedvictoria) which I'm working on right now to add nesting box, sliding door, more ventilation.

We've had them for a week, we've had lovely eggs every day, and we've let them free range for an hour "before bedtime" - I'm truly amazed at how smart they are, ie putting themselves to bed :) My husband was initially shocked that I did this but now finds them relaxing to watch...

So off to more reading - love this website - it's made the last week so much easier for us!!!

If you would like help identifying the breed(s) your chickens are, try posting some good pictures here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/15/what-breed-or-gender-is-this

Good luck!

Glad you joined us at Backyard Chickens. Wow, you really scored. How nice that the new hens are laying for you. Sometimes a move can disrupt them for several weeks before they get back to laying. Would love to see photos.
