New member Hello! got first chickens today

One of our chickens passed away last night =(( I made a vet appt yesterday because we noticed she was lethargic
and had a little trouble breathing. She was eating and drinking last night! Oh dear, what to tell my 7 year old..... and
what to do next?!?!?

Hello, and welcome to BYC. Sorry to hear about your loss. Did your chicken have swollen eyes/eye. Not a lot of info to go on, but I would use Sulmet in their drinking water if any of the others are showing any signs of illness. This could be bacterial or viral. Clean their entire coop/pen/brooder with diluted bleach, clean everything, scald their food and water dispencers. If the problem is bacterial, Sulmet should do the trick, just 2 tablespoons to a gallon of water. If it is viral, you will need to use a broad spectrum antibiotic. Hope this is helpful,GOOD LUCK.

I got the preliminary report back from UC Davis today. It says "The bird was severely emaciated and changes suggestive of focal pneumonia in the left lung were detected grossly. Bacteriology, histology and PCR tests are pending, a final report will follow." and then the most interesting part "10-week-old, male, Buff Orpington chicken" =O male? Well, we couldn't have kept him anyway!

So sorry about your baby.

But it is always nice to get a vet report to find out just what killed the bird.
