Hi all!!
I'm so excited to be starting my chicken journey!!!! I am extremely new to chickens and all the things that come with them. I hatched them for my senior large and small animal class at my school 3 weeks ago, I get to bring mine that have bonded with me home on Friday!! Their names are Honey, Babacaw, Choboni, and Cyanide. I will hopefully have 4 laying hens but I have a suspicion that one of my pullets may actually be a cockerel. My chicks were layed (lain?) at the same place but they are mix breeds and I have no idea what either of the parents are, all I know is that they are mighty cute and I love them lots!!! My favorite aspects are that I get to have these beautiful being in my backyard and spread more of my love. Most of my hobbies have to do with being outside because I love soaking up the sun. My family is just me an my mom, but my boyfriend and I are looking forward to raising our chickens even further rather than leaving them to other people. My boyfriend and I also have a dog but he will go nowhere near our feathery babies. I found BYC because I've been trying to figure out what breeds my chicks are and I've been trying to also use all the tells to sex my chicks without being invasive. I'm so excited to be apart of the group and I'm so excited to learn so much more than I do now!!

Hello Lissa, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.

If the eggs came from a mixed flock you will have barnyard mixes so it will be nearly impossible to determine the breed of the parents. You can post pictures of your suspect cockerel but being a mix, it might be tough to determine gender at 3 weeks old.

This isn't the greatest picture of Choboni but this is the one we are most worried about being a cockerel. The reason we have this suspicion is because Boni has more of a red comb and what looks like a bit of some wattles forming but to my understanding wattles don't help determine. Am I wrong to think that? I appreciate the help!

Not that I would love him any less if he was a he but we aren't allowed to have Roosters in my town and I would hate to not have him but I do have a good home set up just incase it turns out that he is. When do they start crowing if you don't mind me asking?

I am so glad you do have a home lined up for him, it can be so hard to rehome the boys. But still, wait a few weeks before you make a final judgment on him, I've had pullets mature up fast too. :)
Welcome to BYC!
\Some roosters start crowing at 8-10 weeks old. Sometimes it's even earlier than that. Other times they won't start until they are 15+ weeks old. If he's already starting to develop a red comb and wattles and 3 weeks it old it's pretty safe to say it's a cock.
X2!
