Hi all, I found this site while searching to try and find out if my chickens who pecked at a freckle on my leg and drew a little blood presented a danger to me. We have 6 barred rock hens that are about 2 months old, and 3 RIR hens and a rooster, they are about 5 years old. Red our rooster is barely getting around and the hens don't lay much any more, we are doing all that we can to help them live out their twilight years in as much comfort as we can provide. We also have two barn yard cats, June and Annabelle, they are sisters and as cats go, quite independent of us. If anyone has an answer as to the danger of getting pecked by a chicken and as to whether or not it could be a health issue, please let me know. I did come in and immediately wash it out with alcohol.

I think you should not spend any time worrying about the pecked spot.
It is no worse then you getting scratched on the leg by a thorny bush.

An infection isn't likely, unless you have an immunity problem. I doubt you'd have chickens if that were the case. I wouldn't let her get away with it, though. I had a couple hens that would sneak attack the back of my leg when I was busy putting down food or treats. I got them to quit by poking them with my finger as if I were pecking them back or picking them up and holding them for a minute. They got the message after a few times.

The Proper Feeding article was very informative, I appreciate the info. Am much obliged to every one for your comments regarding the pecking incident, it relieved my concerns.
