I have used this forum for about 6 months before I decided to take the dive into a chicken keeper. My in-laws have chickens and I had them as a kid so it was just normal when I noticed theirs how much I missed them. They eat the bugs (less work for me) and produce eggs while also providing something nice and rather comical to watch. I had a few that I taught to whistle in my presence, I had to give the main player away because he would fight all the other chickens including hens. He is in the in-laws pen and now whistles for them when they come in the pen.
Here are some photos of the first batch and second batch I got: https://picasaweb.google.com/117938951345661766219/Chickens?authuser=0&feat=directlink
I have 2 roosters and 6 hens now and plan on adding about 4-6 more hens before stopping. I want to make sure I have enough egg layers in line just in case something were to attack a few (roaming dogs are bad in my area) I have a little dog that tries her best to keep the other animals out, but she's tiny. I also 2 larger dogs but they just want to play with every other dog in the neighborhood, so they are no good for protectors.
Anyways that's my story, and here I am. Thank you all for your advice I have read on here and you seem like a welcoming community.
*CORRECTION* on the title I put Plymouth rocks, I have one Plymouth and most of the others are White Rock. You can see them in the picasa album. I like picasa because it keeps my original photos resolution.
