New to this chicken thing, we rescued two hens from a home where they were being mistreated. We had never had chickens before. We quickly took an old bunny house we had, cleaned it, painted it and built a nesting box for it. We then built an outdoor coop in our existing fully fenced and covered with netting garden. They have full range of the 3o'x30' space during the day and interaction with our dogs. At night they are safe and sound in their coop. They came to us not looking so good, I did all the reading and research I could. I'm feeding them a crumble from a local ranch supply and dried worms for treats, plus kitchen scraps of things they can safely consume and like to eat... Within 3 months they had beautiful red cackles, their feathers were brilliant colors again and they are growing in size...They started laying eggs and now lay, yes even during a snow storm last week, almost one egg each a day! I am loving this and think we will expand our chicken family this summer, maybe. Looking forward to reading and researching more on how, when and what we should do if we decide to.
