Hi all, I'm a newbie here. Currently living in Ohio soon to be in Tennessee. Will be building the coops soon and getting chicks in June. Just wanted to say hi. I've learned a lot just reading the forums and hope to soon be able to share information. I'm so excited to be able to finally do this!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Good luck with your move to TN, and with your coop building project and chicks!

We are new to BYC and also to chicken raising. We have four, now 22 days old. We have two Rhode Island Red, one Barred Rock and a Buff Orpington.
I have learned a huge amount on this site, and would compare it to any how-to book out there.
My question is about one of the RIR, 22 days old....seems to have pretty regular problems with pooping. She had poop stuck to her fluff from a couple days old, didn't seem to block her vent pooping more, but we soaked and cleaned it off. During the last 10 days or so she will strain and strain to get her poop out, at least a couple times a day. Her vent always goes back to normal right after, but it can take several minutes for her to get the poop out, and almost looks prolapsed, red, and tender. She fusses during this time quite loudly.
From reading this site I have tried/am using apple cider vinegar, olive oil directly into her, pumpkin, egg yolk and yogurt, oil and water in the mash, sweet potato, apple sauce, access to sand for scratching, Vaseline/Prep H on her vent and gently inside, access to plenty of water, make sure she's not too hot......
She seems perky as ever, is one of the most friendly, flaps around, scratches/interacts with her 'sisters', generally fits In just fine, doesn't seem sick at all.
But is there anything I can do to resolve her struggles permanently? A magic touch anyone can advise? ( she's indoors still, on pine shavings...) (tried to include all relevant info!!)

I am also new to BYC and I have a question? Is there a way that you could post something(a question) on BYC without adding it to somebody else's? Could you start a "page" about your own question? Thanks!!

Welcome ShelleyJ and 4PetsWithEggs to BYC!

ShelleyJ, Good luck in all your poultry adventures! If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

4PetsWithEggs...I have never heard of a baby having so much trouble. This chick could have some birth defect that is blocking the vent area. You seem to be on the right track trying all the things that you have tried. I don't know if there is anything you can do for her.

You might try posting this in the Raising Baby Chicks forums section here on BYC to see if anyone else has had this issue and can advise you...

I am so sorry about your baby and I hope you can find a solution to her problems.

Yes! Go to the section you wish to start a thread in....say Feeding and Watering Your Flock....(you will find the forums tab at the top of this page). Right beneath the heading of say, Feeding and Watering Your Flock, there is a grey/blue tab that says, Start A New Thread. Click on that. That will lead you to your page to start a new thread. :-)

I'm sorry for asking so many questions but on the top right of the page I see where it says "new member here", but underneath it I don't see anything that says "start a new thread". Thanks!
