(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

I'm new to chickens. I've only had them for 2 days, but they're so cute... I didn't know they could be so cute!

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

7 chicks.

(3) What breeds do you have?

Not really sure, they're feed store chicks. I think two are cuckoo marans, 3 are barred rock, and the other 2 are unknown, but they're stripey. It's been pretty difficult to find chicks or eggs, so I just got what I could get while I could get it.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

I really like the idea of having eggs and knowing exactly where they came from. In general, I'm trying for food soverignty. So, I have a garden as well. I'd eventually like to have quail, turkeys, and geese.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

I like knitting and sewing. I can spin yarn, too.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

Currently it's just me and a couple cats on 5 acres in the middle of nowhere.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?

I knew about the forum for a while, but never bothered joining because I didn't have any chickens. Now I do!

Congratulations on getting your chicks, regardless of the breed! It's weird because they grow so fast, and yet it seems like FOREVER when you're waiting for your first eggs.

I can relate to your "me and a couple cats on 5 acres in the middle of nowhere." However, I have WAY more critters and a little less acreage, surrounded by endless flat farm fields.

Welcome to BYC; glad you finally had a reason to join!
