Some good advice above. Selecting the chickens you want to care for is sort of a balancing act between, production, temperament, appearance and ease of care. Sometimes your more striking birds are not great producers. Some folks may not find that the production breeds meet their aesthetic requirements. Some pretty producers are expensive or skittish. Take a look at Henderson's Chicken Breed Chart, the Breeds Section on this site, and the breed summaries on some of the mail order hatchery sites (my favorite is Meyer Hatchery).
Start thinking about what attributes are going to be most important to you. Take your time. You are in it for the long haul with them. You've come to the right place to start.
