New member in Idaho

Well, you and your dogs are now in Lucy's flock! Of course she hangs with all y'all - chickens are flock animals.

I have several hens which love to sit in my lap to be petted. I've got a rather large flock of fifty-plus hens,2 mature roosters, around 20 youngsters, plus ducks, geese, and turkeys. So even hens in larger flocks can like extra attention from their people. :)

You might have to lock Lucky in the coop for three or four days until she "gets" that is her home and it's safe to lay eggs there.

Oh, and welcome to BYC from California wine country in the Western Sierra Foothills! :frow

On the day of the fire; there were originally three chickens that had survived. Two of the original chickens plus one of the new ones, also the new chickens had not been introduced to the original chickens. My neighbor who already had five chickens offered to take the one new chicken and I kept the two original ones. Unfortunatley the second chicken that I was taking care of passed away the next day. I think that she had just too much smoke. It was nothing short of a miracle that any of these chickens survived at all. Since Lucy had gone through so much, we were nervous about introducing another chicken. The city ordinance for Boise only allows six chickens so my neighbors can't take Lucy. Besides at this point I have become pretty attached to her and would prefer to keep her with me. I have thought about seeing if the chicken that is at the neighbors house would do ok at our house with Lucy but I really do not know how to introduce a new chicken and how to make sure that they are getting along ok and not hurting each other so ANY advice will help!!

Welcome to BYC. Lucy needs a friend, or 2 , or 3, or---------------------------------------------------

I think we are ready to introduce a new chicken to Lucy. I am looking for suggestions from you guys. She is two years old and she is a Rhode Island Red and VERY friendly to people.
So I need to know what kind of chicken you guys think would be best, what age I should look for- I am in the Boise, Idaho area so I am hoping to hear from locals as the where the best place to find a chicken to adopt. Thank you and wish us luck!
