Hi I am a new member in Nebraska and finding there are a lot of people out there with chickens, but not a lot that are near me and it seems like most I have met seem to eat them, not pets. So when I explain that I want pretty pets that are friendly they think I am nuts. My friends understand but none of them have chickens. Anyway is was nice to read about soooo many people that "get it".
I spent months researching and close to a year building and organizing the best, low work coop that I could design. So far all is great! Thanks to all for so many awesome ideas from this site!
I have Wyandottes, a Barred Rock, a RIR, a couple Polish (smooth), a Speckled Sussex, and an Americana with the goofiest personality.
Best part is all their individual personalities! I have found earning their trust to be rewarding. Some more trusting than others, but they are coming around and liking being held.
I am wondering about the sex of a few, hoping for girls as I would like a Welsummer pair because this whole time I wanted that to be the rooster. I had ordered them 4+ months ago and they did not come with the rest because they "had a bad batch" which really stinks because that was the whole reason I started this was that pair as the center. (Marans are so beautiful too but I liked the hen of the Welsummer better.) I have found people a couple hours from me with Marans and it has been tempting!!! I really wanted them to be raised together, but of course, now the date soonest to get here is end of June.
My bigger illusive bird is the Bearded Buff Lace Polish Frizzle. I have contacted tons of people and spent at least an hour per day for months! ( no kidding) And I am sure there are NONE anywhere near me. I have contacted tons of breeders, maybe you, about buying one or a few and many have suggested eggs. I talked to a couple breeders that then disappeared and I never hear from again. (Gretchen actually I am worried something bad happened because now her site is disabled, not my business, but I am worried about them) So I welcome any information about finding a breeder that will ship either chicks or adult.
As you can tell, I am hooked!
