Hello all, I've been lurking for a while, but finally registered today.

We live in a city that does not allow chickens. Several years ago, I researched quail as an alternative since they are allowed. I thought it would be great to have our own fresh eggs for our family's consumption. After researching for a while, I decided that raising quail wasn't worth it. Well... that was when a dozen (chicken) eggs were under $1.

This will be a project / lesson with my daughter, as I teach her about building things (in this case, basic woodworking to make cages) and we both learn to be more self-reliant. We do have several fruit trees in the yard, but I have never raised, grown, hunted, slaughtered, milked, etc an animal.

Although this site is primarily about chickens, it still seems to be the best resource for quail. From research on this site and YouTube, we will go with Coturnix quail. I will continue to use this website and read as much as I can. Thanks all!

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow

I kept Quail for nearly 11 years. They are super fun to raise, they are smart and do quite well if you give them a lot of space. I kept mine in big aviaries, but Rabbit hutches or small chicken coops with attached runs work well too.

Good luck and welcome aboard!
