Welcome to the coop! I use the Forums and Articles tabs at the top of the page to do research. You can get lost for hours. It's nice to know you are minutes away from getting help with questions and emergencies! I always check in the "What's New" section as well at the top of this page. This way I can read how I may have a similar question or help give some advice.

Hi!

I purchased my first home in Arlington, VT in August of 2021. The house came with a coop that had 4 lovely hens in it. We knew nothing about caring for chickens, but did our best to learn. We are pet people, and can't help but consider our hens pets, and we named them after our grandmothers. We also love the delicious eggs they lay, of course.

In the fall, two of my hens were hit by the same car speeding down our road. We wanted to let them free range when we were home, and sometimes they crossed the street to explore. Most of the time, people slowed down to let them cross and smiled and waved. It's Vermont, after all, with lots of chicken-friendly people around. We were devastated by the callous hit & run. Just last week, one of my two remaining hens died from a sickness I was unable to identify because I could not locate a chicken vet anywhere around here. From my reading, I thought perhaps she had a blocked egg duct, but I'll never know now. I was stunned by the lack of vets and felt helpless and awful that I couldn't help her.

I have one sweet girl left and I'm hoping to introduce some pullets to her when I can find some nearby that come from a good farm. I don't want to give up on being a chicken owner even after the tragedies and lack of veterinary care for them in the area. That's where you all come in!

Any Vermont chicken owners in this forum? Looking forward to learning more from experienced owners.
