Hello.
I am not totally new to chickens, having helped raise Speckled Sussex as a teenager for a historic restoration in NC and then having my own backyard flock in Portland, OR. But I am starting a new flock now that I am living in a community outside of Yosemite National Park.
We have 19 chicks now (16 five-week-olds and 3 three-week-olds). They are a variety - Blue Ameraucana, Black Copper Marans, Welsummer, Lavender Orpington, Salmon Faverolle, Barred Rock, Rhode Island Red, Olive Egger, and Cream Legbar. I love raising chickens for the eggs, the antics and their beauty.
Chickens are one of my favorite things here on the ranch along with having an orchard and some soon-to-be vegetable beds. My husband and I left Portland to take care of our elders, who each has medical issues. We envision Harmony Rancho as a self-sustaining place of healing for all who live and visit here.
I initially found BYC through a search for issues with my chickens while in Portland. I still use it for research when there are things that aren't quite right with my chickens or when I need some affirmation that I am doing the right thing. With this latest issue, I knew that it was time for me to ask questions directly to the community!
