Hello - We live in Kennebunk Maine in a rural area with rolling fields and open land. We have a small flock of chickens of various kinds, including some bantams - 2 Wyandots, a Buff Orpington, a Black Australorp, and an Easter Egger. Only one bantam hen with (the luck of the random egg order) 3 bantam roosters. We have had the chickens for about 3 years now. The Maine winters can be pretty harsh so we put a couple of flat panel radiant heaters in the coop - one high near the nighttime perch for the full-size hens and one low for the bantams who don't perch for the night.
We are heading into winter now, so I want to post an entry in the feed section for some more help. I have been reading Backyardchickens for the whole time we have had ours and finally got around to creating an account.
thanks to everyone for the great information and articles - it has all been a huge help in raising our chickens.
my user name is because my wife is an artist so all our chickens have names after her favorite artists - Pablo is obvious, then there is Frieda Kahlo, Dora Mar, Brachette, and Peony named after a flower because our daughter is a floral designer with her own business in Portland.
