Hi everyone! For years I wanted chickens, as I remember having chickens, ducks and rabbits as a kid. We finally have property now that we can have/do whatever we want! We started with 5 baby chicks, but two became roosters, so they had to leave. "Henrietta" is a golden sex link and hasn't missed a day laying an egg since she started laying! She also lets me pick her up. The two Wyandottes, "Miss Cluck" and "Nugget" aren't as friendly but they do respond to my voice. We recently added two cochins, "Princess Layer" and "Hen Solo" . That's how I found Backyard Chickens! The new hens are still pullets and the older girls weren't happy at the new intruders so I needed to know how to handle it, because I did it all wrong! The newbies are now in their own coop within the run for the time being. This also solved my problem with Miss Cluck, who decided to brood instead of laying. I kicked her out of that original coop for the newbies and my husband built a new coop within the run. She has started leaving the run again when we let them free range in the evenings. Hopefully, she's "cured"!

Hello Treasea. Welcome to BYC! There is tons of info here and very good people to help you on your journey as a new chicken owner. :)

I don't know how much reading/research you've already done, but if you want to get the most out of BYC, I suggest you do the following:
  • Spend some time in the Learning Center
  • When you have specific questions, most of the time a quick search will come up with the answers.
  • If you don't find anything useful that way, post your question in an appropriate sub-forum. People here are very helpful and will answer your question even it has been asked 100 times before.
I recommend you search for "integration" or "integrating", particularly in the Articles area for good info on how to bring new birds into your flock.

Enjoy your time here.
