Hi Group,
I've been reading BYC voraciously, then remembered that I got an account a few years ago, so here I am. I'm no longer on Long Island, but back home in Wisconsin

I grew up on a farm, and kept a small flock with my grandparents, until my grandfather passed away when I was 17. It was a real kaleidoscope "barnyard mix". Some RIR, some Wyandotte, New Hampshire... The local farm store would give away chicks they didn't sell, and they no longer wanted to feed, and my 4H buddies sometimes had cool stuff to trade. We had about 20-30 birds, new roosters (or at least the "use" of new roosters) all the time.

This is really my goal today. Purposely populate my flock with a diverse group, and select birds for egg laying, cold hardiness, and interesting coloration. I interlibrary loaned some books on poultry genetics, and need to read up quickly, and select some founding members soon.

I'm a chemist by training (phd), seriously under-employed at the moment. I have a ton of other hobbies and interests. I build ukuleles, telescopes, etc. I'm also working on a pinhole photography project. Just here to try and read and learn. I've seen a lot of posts that demonstrate real high level knowledge.
