(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We had chickens when I was a little girl but I was actually afraid of them because the rooster pecked my dad and drew blood. I figured if it would take him on, what would it do to me. Many years later in 2015 I was interested in getting some but because I live in a suburban area and needed to do some travel for work I put it off. In the fall of 2019 something told me it was time so I ordered 3 chicks and was happily getting eggs from them in 2020 when eggs were hard to find in stores.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Three started pullets, three at almost 5 weeks, and six at almost 2 weeks. I only plan to keep 1 of the 5 week old chicks and 1 or 2 of the 2 week old chicks (assuming I have hens and not roos). I have lost a few previously to predation and also found homes for two roosters.
(3) What breeds do you have?
The started pullets are 2 Hedemora and 1 Cream Legbar. The 5 week olds are the product of a cross between my cream legbar and a very fine French Black Copper Marans rooster I had to find a home for. They take after dad in coloring so far but have mom's crest and at least two have her tail. The 2 week olds are the products of a Gold Deathlayer I had to find a home for last year and my best original hen, a Golden Cuckoo Marans, and some other assorted hens including a Buff Orpington and a Barred Plymouth Rock. I plan to keep the chick from the GCM x DL cross if it is a hen, if not I will be looking for a home for it as I can't keep a rooster. One of the other chicks is a beautiful mahogany color and I may keep that one of it is a hen. It is the smallest, seems to be a slower developer. The rest will go to the person who has the DL rooster as they wanted some replacement birds.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
The eggs are so much better!!! They all also have different personalities and are interesting, plus they help in the garden to reduce bugs and eat scraps.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Gardening, beekeeping, fine arts.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I had two cats but they passed. I miss them dearly, but the chickens have helped temper that a tiny bit. I'd like to get another one, but it isn't the right time yet.
I work as an engineer and live with my long-time boyfriend. I enjoy traveling and have been lucky enough to visit many countries, some for work and art but most for vacation.
