HI, my name is sheila and I am a poser,
well actually not really. I am looking for my Aunt Carol In Henryetta Oaklhoma. I told her i would get her a few laying hens for Christmas. Well its Easter and warmer now and she has four nice laying hens who need a new rooster. She has a mean rooster that is picking on the one yellow chicken she has. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orpington_chicken) I told her that if she had more like her in the harem that maybe it would spread out the attension. Well the poor dear is hiding under her nesting box form him now. She might need a new rooster or a nice pair of boys who want to dance with all the ladies there in the hen house. Can you tell I know nothing about chickens?

Ok so, my sweet Aunt Carol has a nice hen house over there in Oklahoma and can take four nice layers and a new rooster. We hope for local as shipping is so much it is beyond my abilities.

So my pic is of "me" in a chicken suit because I am a poser, I live int he suburbs and I am not really an owner or a breeder. I am giving my Aunt acess to help her finds the animals I am paying for.

Nice to meet you all!

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Wow, nice chicken suit!! LOL

Good luck with shipping adult birds. It can be quite stressful on them. No doubt the rooster is over breeding the hen, possibly harming or or endangering her life. Roosters need 8 to 10 hens to mate with as they can over mate one hen to death.

Make yourself at home here and if you have any questions about anything, feel free to ask. Welcome to our flock!

Welcome to BYC, Sheila. Glad you decided join our flock. My wife and I were both raised in Texas, not far from where you live (Blue Ridge for her, Greenville for me). When I was in Greenville High School our football team used to play Plano every season (maybe they still do). Your Aunt Carol definitly needs to get some more hens to go with that rooster. If that doesn't solve the aggression problem, she should get rid of the rooster. The only reason she really needs a rooster is to fertilize eggs for hatching and 1 rooster can easily handle 10-15 hens in that regard. Also, you don't want to breed that kind of aggression into your flock. If she really wants a rooster, there are loads of unwanted roosters out there just waiting to be re-homed and she can certainly find a good one. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.

If your aunt doesn't plan to hatch eggs at some future date, she doesn't need a rooster. Hens will continue to lay eggs (non fertile) without one, and be much happier and better off physically without a rooster.

Well she has a rooster for a reason, and they eat the eggs soon after they are fetilized. She says the roosters scares away varmits. There are possums nd coons around.

Thanks for the warm welcome!

btw its not really me its a vintage postcard , I didnt mean it literally.
