Hello! I’ve read lots of BYC threads on all different topics for a long time now, but I finally just became a member and would like to introduce myself.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
•I am not new to chickens, I have had many over the past years. The first chickens I’ve ever had I got probably about 5 years ago now, but we unfortunately had to get give them away after a few months of having them. Slightly longer than two years ago, I moved to a 2-acre lot and soon after got chickens for the second time. My flock has increased in size over time, sadly however, I have also lost several birds to coyotes and owls.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
•Right now I have 41 chickens. It is the most that I have ever had at one time, and I hatched 19 of them almost 3 months ago.
(3) What breeds do you have?
•I have many different breeds, as well as some hybrids. I have one prairie bluebell Egger (Araucana x White Leghorn hybrid), one silver laced Wyandotte, one Plymouth barred rock, one Rhode Island Red, one sapphire gem, four Easter Eggers, four Crele old English game bantams, one golden comet (White rock x New Hampshire), one white leghorn, three bearded silkie bantams (splash, buff, and black [rooster]), one crevecœur, one buff orpington, two of different unidentified breeds, as well as 14 young hybrids and five young silkies (buff x black cross).
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
•I love getting to watch my chickens grow up, lay their first eggs, hatch their own chicks, and even just watching them and taking care of them.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
•I love nature, and I always have for as long as I can remember. I love being outside: birdwatching, camping, rock hounding, studying plants, insects, and other animals, etc., hiking, and climbing, among other activities.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
•Besides my 41 chickens, I have two border collies, three yearling tortoises (one sulcata and two Sonoran Desert tortoises), two peacocks, one Guinea fowl, and I am currently incubating two emu eggs. Throughout my life I have had many other pets, including a frog, another dog, 12 chickens, a hamster, a bearded dragon, a Guinea pig, a rabbit, and a few more.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
•I found BYC when I was looking online for answers to a question I had, and have used it for a long time now. I decided to join the community to learn from others’ experiences and get advice, tips, and knowledge on different topics, as well as to offer information to others who may need it or find it helpful.
