My name is Jessica, I live in the small town of DuPont, WA which is between Tacoma and Olympia near Joint Base Lewis McChord.

We are new to chickens, we just had our first chicks hatch on Monday, June 15th.

We ordered our chicks from MPC and originally ordered 2 Rocks, 2 Australorps, and 2 Light Brahma's. We were going to split the order with a friend since we only want a small flock of 3 or 4 hens. Sadly both Light Brahma's and a Rock did not make the USPS trip.

We were traumatized by the death and I really had my heart set on my Light Brahma so we are currently looking for somewhere fairly local to buy just 1 Light Brahma chick, but so far we are having no luck. The feed stores that we checked so far stopped having chicks in April and the others have either not responded or do not have Light Brahma's.

Our 3 remaining chicks who are 4 Days old now are doing wonderful. No pasty butt, and are eating, drinking, pooping, playing, and sleeping just like any other baby. They are a complete joy and I am waiting on pins and needles till I can take them outside to forage around for a bit.

I am a bird person by nature, I have owned several parrots and am currently the owner of a Yellow Sided, Green Cheek Conure. When we got tired of promoting the inhumane treatment of chickens and found it hard to get away from GMO's, antibiotics, and hormones as well as cage free, we decided that we would just raise our own chickens for eggs. (we could never eat them, they will be with us till their last breath)

I found BackYardChickens on Google the first day when we first decided we wanted to get chickens and used it for a lot of my research into what breeds we wanted and what we needed to accommodate the chickens. We have gotten such great advice here.

I have pretty boring hobbies, I mostly like entertainment of most any kind, books, video games, movies, television, and music.

I am starting my first try at planting some vegetables. We bought 2 blueberry plants earlier in the season and were given a tomato plant and we are getting ready to plant Snap Peas, Green Beans, Lemon Sunflowers, Autumn Sunflowers, Cucumber, corn, watermelon, pumpkins, and a few huckleberry bushes. Oh yeah and some red clover for the chickens since most of our grass is dead with the exception of a few persistent weeds.

I think it may still be a tad late in the season, but I am using this as a test run to see if I will keep up with a garden and if I can then next year I will plan out in advance a better above ground garden which is enclosed away from our chickens. This way we can buy seeds that are Non GMO and have no pesticides on them.

I am married to my high school sweetheart and we have been together over 20 years. We have 2 beautiful sons, a Conure, and a 15 Year old Yorkie and Pomeranian. I used to be a paralegal, but got laid off and decided it was a good time to have children. One of my kids is still in Kindergarten and has a strange schedule where he is half day but then every other Wednesday he is either off all day or there all day. This has made it hard to go back to work so at this point I have been out of work so long that I will likely need a change in occupation or have to continue to stay home.

I am looking forward to getting outside more and keeping busy with the chickens and the garden, I have started to turn into a vampire.

Look forward to getting to know you guys.

Nice to meet you Jessica, hope you enjoy Backyard chickens as much as we do. That is a very unusual schedule for your son but, maybe that's how things our in your part of the country. You may want to join your state thread to find out what chicken activities are going on in your area and make some friends. I used to be on the Washington thread because my son lives out there but, just couldn't keep up with the face pace and being so very, very far away from there.
