Hello - My family and I are moving to San Martin CA at the end of the month and our new home comes equipped with a chicken coop! This will be a new experience for us, but I can't stop thinking about how fun it will be to have a few chickens. I am thinking that 4 hens will be good for us, as we are a family of 4. We have some nice property where the chickens can roam when when are home, and a nice pen for when we are at work. Let the fun begin!

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! Oh how exciting for you to be starting your chicken adventures :celebrate I'm sure you will enjoy it very much. It's great fun keeping hens, very rewarding and the chicken TV is great. Do you have breed/s in mind?

Drop by the learning centre if you have not already, lots of super and very informative articles on getting started. Here is the link ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

Wishing you the very best of luck with your move and getting started. Be sure to ask any questions that you may have, everyone here to help and very friendly.

Enjoy BYC and all the chicken chat :frow

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Four hens sounds like it will be perfect for you! Small flocks are so great! Makes it easier for you to bond with them and learn about each of their personalties. Do you know what breeds you want yet? I would definitely check out these two links. They are very helpful when it comes to choosing chicken breeds. https://www.backyardchickens.com/products/category/chicken-breeds https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/how-to-pick-the-right-chicken-breeds-for-you

Also, be sure to check out the learning center link provided by Yorkshire Coop. TONS of helpful info there! And feel free to ask any questions. We are happy to help.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Murray McMurray has an excellent "chick selector" tool at https://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/chick_selector.html which you can use to help you determine which breeds are best for you. Just be sure and click on "show more characteristics." Even if you don't purchase your birds from Murray, the "chick selector" is still a valuable tool. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting your flock.
