Hello, I am in the process of design, and build of a coop. I would like to start with 6 chickens, don't know which kind yet. My plans are for a 6x8 or 8x8 coop with a 16x8 covered run. It gets up to 100 in summer and rains. I have two areas in my yard one with full sun all day, and one with full shade all day under two trees. I don't what location is best. Is insulation overkill in florida when it doesn't get that cold for very long? Thanks for any suggestions.

Welcome neighbor!!! I am in Callahan.

I do not have insulation in my coop, but I do have the coop close enough to an electrical outlet we I can plug a heat lamp up for mine if need be. I would be more concerned about our hot summers. Shade is a must in Fl. although they do need so many hrs a day of sunlight for egg laying.

Good Luck!!!!

Hello from Oregon and welcome to BYC!

We have below freezing weather for periods of time every winter but our coop is not insulated. The chickens do well right down to freezing. When it drops below 32 degrees, I plug in a heat lamp. I'd be much more concerned about excessive heat. It's good that you have full day shade under trees. Shrubs would be even better! An automatic waterer that keeps water fresh and COOL would be good investment, too.
