Hello my name is Ben from Riverview New Brunswick. I'm happy I found this website because I have many questions about starting out with chickens. I've been experiencing some issues with getting information from the town on whether or not I can raise chickens in my backyard. I finally got ahold of a urban planner and he said that the Town of Riverview is having their meeting this upcoming monday on the new Municipal Plan. The new plan is set to be up online the following tuesday at noon. The planner said I need to look to see if there is anything on there with regards to urban agriculture. If there is nothing than I am to send him a write up stating we need more info on that subject and that we should have a trial for backyard chickens. My challenge now is to gather info on the benefits of having backyard chickens and the possible issues that may arise with neighbours if any. Also I need ways to stop these issues from occuring.
So basically I'm looking for some input on the benefits of backyard chickens and ways to eliminate issues from occuring with neighbours. Any help would be greatly appreciated and hopefully we can resolve this issue so many more people in this town can have chickens.

Hello, welcome to BYC. I'm new here too. :)

The city I live close to allows up to 6 hens for a property but no roosters, which seems reasonable to me because not everyone appreciates roosters. And some roosters insist on crowing at 2 AM then every hour after that. That may not sit very well with neighbors.

Good luck!

You will find great information here at BYC that will help you. I think you should start by reading the posts at the link referred to you by redsoxs. I would also suggest that you try to attend any meetings or hearings open to the public as the town develops rules that might apply to keepers of chickens. Check out the info here at the forum about the new partnership between BYC and Facebook that i think could lead to a great positive change in how the public at large and government officials view backyard chicken keeping. There are so many benefits to raising chickens that you'll read about on this forum and you can outline to your govt. planners that could help influence their decisions and policy making...

Chickens are pleasing to look at and cut way way down on bugs..they lay eggs and help a person or family be self sufficient. Eggs in stores come from hens that live terrible lives and are fed antibiotics constantly...Who wants to eat those eggs? I would send some pictures of a factory chicken farm and then have a few of a nice homestead chicken coop. It's better for people and chickens too.
Neighbors might not like crowing, in which case make a no rooster rule...but that sucks. I don't know how you go about making such a plan, but I would highlight the good and the fact that the good far outweighs any bad. There is very little smell when chickens are kept in adequate spacing with proper ventilation...
