New Member Looking for answers and advice

Thanks everyone for the great advice.

I think they are Australorp chickens based on my limited research but let me know if you think otherwise.

I let them out for the first time this weekend around 3:30pm and they came back around 4:30pm with no problem.

How long do you usually have them free range for?

We open the doors when we get around to it in the morning so anytime between 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and they put themselves back at dusk. We come by and lock the doors later.

We are around though, and have two dogs and two outdoor cats that help keep the riff raff away.

:welcome hi RJ04,
Nice to see you are getting more confident with the advices given.

Everyone does things a bit differently, depending on the climate, soil, time to spend with them, the coop and run space, other animals like cats, dogs rodents and predators around the garden.

I free range my 9 bantam chickens almost every day for a few hours when I am at home. Because the risk is higher to loose one if everything is quiet. And I don’t let them free range the whole day because my garden is not fenced, and the chickens tend to wonder off further, if they are free ranging many hours every day.

If I find a nest with eggs I always check if they are good to eat with a double test:
- water test : if you put an egg in a glass with water, it should go to the bottom immediately and stay there on its side.
- look and smell test: break the eggs in a separate bowl. Is the egg white still thick and the yolk sturdy? and does it smell good?
If both are good. The egg is perfectly safe to eat.
If you don’t wash eggs , and it’s not warm where you keep them, the eggs are good for at least 4 weeks.

HI and welcome! If you can't watch your chickens all day, I suggest just letting them free range for an hour or two before sunset. Letting them free range all day (unless your property is fenced and safe from dogs and other predators) makes them very vulnerable.. Everything wants to eat chicken.
