Marengo

I'm a tough old hen with a tiny farm in Marengo, Ohio. Retired Navy RN (20yrs), I'm a nursing professor at a local college.
On my small farm I raise: 1 - 19yo stepson, 1 foster red chow, 5 cats, 1 peacock, 7 ducks (3 Cayuga, 4 blue Swedish), 7 turkeys (slate & Eastern wild), Marans, buff Brahmas, 2 hives of bees, 4 Fjord horses and alot of weeds.
The stepson & horses are my passions, the poultry is my hobby.

I was given 2 black polish top hat chicks last year. Since I couldn't sex them, I named them "Thing 1" and "Thing 2" (just like in the cat in the hat". It turned out I had a rooster & hen - and they were so much fun to watch! Then Thing 2, the little hen, got out of the pen and was killed by a raccoon. I'm looking to replace her, Thing 1 is so lonely, the other chickens are full size. I think it would be fun to find a White hen with a Black top hat - mirror image of the cock.

My Fjord horses are 2 mares Tigger (Hannah), and Thumper (Miss Thunder). Yes, they actually came to me with those names. Their 6 month old colts are Herlig and Torden. Torden is not an actual "name". It's the Norwegian word for "the sound of thunder". Since his mother is Miss Thunder, I thought it sounded clever. Lots of Thors, Odins, etc, registered - only 1 "Torden".

I'm really Ronni Taylor, and I call my small place "Straw Hat Stables". I had that name in New Mexico, and when I moved back to Ohio to help take care of my parents, I kept the name - though I'm now a farm, not a true "stables".

from a fellow Buckeye. So glad you joined. I know where Marengo is, my DD was on a shooting team and we camped there for the SCTP shoot. Great story, thanks for sharing.
