Hi everyone:frownewbie here. This is my first time owning chickens I have two female Barred rocks (the others sadly lost to cannibalism from those two):( They are pretty friendly and will let you hold them for a while. Their names are Peck y and Becky(I just chose random names) One day I noticed that part of Peckys comb had turned black the next day the black part of it fell off:eek: I soon found out that it was frostbite. Does anyone know if a chickens comb will grow back? and how to prevent and treat frostbite??

Welcome to backyard Chickens sadly it will not grow back but she will have a life even so you can put vaseline on what is left and find why it happened is there enough ventilation in the coop

Sorry you're starting out with issues. Sounds like you have a space issue, and a ventilation issue in your coop. Chickens should have at least 4 s.f. per bird in the coop and 10 s.f. per bird in the run. If you have a small flock, you need even more room than that. Ventilation should be a minimum of 1 s.f./bird in the coop. If the coop lacks ventilation, moisture will build up and the birds will get frost bite. In a large coop with adequate ventilation and increased cu. ft. (increased height) chickens can tolerate sub zero temps w/o frost bite issues. To answer your question, No. the dead tissue will not grow back.

Greetings and welcome to BYC! So glad you joined us. There's a wealth of info, knowledge and experience shared in the multitude of threads. Browse around and see what interesting stuff you can find. By all means post away when the desire strikes you, especially if you have questions (provide as much detail/info as possible and pictures truly help)... With all the great folks here, generally someone will respond in no time at all. Please make yourself at home!

Oh, if you haven't done so already, PLEASE put at least your general location in your profile. It could be very important if/when you ask for or offer help or advice. You know, climate issues and such. Old folks like me :old will never remember & look there first. To add it, mouse hover over Account top right and a drop down will appear. Click on Personal Details and scan down. You'll see the spot for Location. Then go to the bottom and save changes. Thanks! Hope you enjoy the site!
