I guess you can say poultry saved my life,
I was headed down a bad path. My family life was not good and I fell in with gang members. A local 4-H group had a fair to teach cuty kids about them and the animals they raised. We lived on the out skirts of town so i bought 4 chickens ,2 were leghorns, white rock and a australorp, my white rock earned her fame for growing huge and the younger kids named her big mama. I joined the 4-H club and soon got a pr of old gray geese and a pr of pekins,And 2 female muscovy that had frozen their feet off, named stubby and nubby. I was 14
im 49 now . And poultry has been a bright spot in my life. I have learned to charish hatching new life and the wonder it brings. To except failure when no matter what you do its not enough and you loose a bird that won your heart. I once sat all day waiting to watch a hen lay an egg. Poultry have taught me to enjoy the quiet times, I can sit for hours watching the flock. I learned to butcher that its never pretty but I know where my food comes from , I learned to incubate, patience , and wonder , To breed for a goal to improve and to cull. To have pets and to have a food source. I am a true muscovy lover haveing them most of my life. I had them before they were cool LOL ...
my goal now is to live on enough land to raise my own food as much as possible , to raise a few heritage breeds .
I have had just about everything as a pet , skunks, racoons, armadillo, the list goes on. LOL
Im in new mexico, I dont plan on staying where im at for ever. too dry.
