New chicken owner here in Sarasota, FL.
I'm originally from South Texas - raised with chickens there but I was a kid and all I knew was how to catch the chicks and gather the eggs. I seldom helped with cleaning coops etc.
We have a Basset Hound, a cat, a rabbit... a 1 yr old human and a 5 yr old human. Getting the chickens was the 5 yr old idea and because daddy can't seem to say no we now have chickens.
We currently have 21 chicks... 12 are almost 2 weeks older than the other 9. All are Welsummer hens... or at least that's what I ordered from Tractor Supply.
I googled chickens in Florida and BackYardChickens.com came up... then I googled chicken coop ideas and BackYardChickens.com came up... then I googled can chickens be in the rain and again BackYardChickens.com came up. Since I had already read 3 threads well into the double digits, I decided to see what else this site had to offer. The more I clicked the more I liked... and now I'm a member.
I was raised on a ranch with animals everywhere - loved it and hope to give memories like that to my children. Unfortunately, husband is a city-boy and clueless to the work needed to have healthy pets... did I mention he doesn't do manual labor. My 5-yr old (Chelsea) is in love with nature and saving all the animals. Because of her our hobbies include:
That's us in a nut shell.

- gardening (recently finished 1 flower bed of 52 plants and another of 18 - butterflies love it)
- hair bow making
- crafting (stamping, jewelry making)
- coloring
- soccer (mostly daddy - the girls and I don't get it)
