Hi, y'all!

Before I tell you where I'm at now, let me tell you where I've been. Back when I was raising my large family (i.e. The Heathen Multitude), we had a 100 acre farm in West Virginia. Complete with all the required critters including a ever-changing flock of chickens, any & all breeds, whatever I could pick up at the local stock sales. We lost several to red-tailed hawks, but our scrappy little hens did raise a brood or two.

Now I'm on a 1/4 acre city lot which I'm trying to turn back into that 100 acre farm. Town ordinances allow hens but not roosters. The back yard is divided into fenced garden lots, so free ranging is doable. I also have a small barn that I'm now rehabing into an evening coop.

I *was* all primed to get some banty chix this week, but our local Southern States is taking pre-orders for POL Bovans, 18 weeks old, for around $6.50 each. Since I'm only looking for 4-5 hens (just hubby & me now), this seems to be a preferable way to go since I won't have the time, expense or trauma of raising baby chicks. The girls will come in sometime in May all ready to go.

Hope to hear from others in southwestern Virginia.

Jane
