(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I have had chickens about 1 year now

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

I started with 21 chickens and 2 turkeys

(3) What breeds do you have?

I have American Bresse and Black Australorp

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

Over the course of this year they have taught me a few things. I appreciate the eggs certainly. We butchered some roosters and learned they are a little tough at about 16 weeks. we could use some coaching on how to prep or when to process those buggers. I have learned that I adore the turkeys personalities.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

We are cranking up the homestead. We love constructing, crafting, mechanicing, FISHING, tinkering with our greenhouse and aquaponics system, church and a personal relationship with the Savior of this world is a high priority for our family and networking with other people makes our heart beat.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

My husband and I have been married 4 years and I now have a 13 year old stepson . We just bought 8 acres a little over a year ago and have spent the past year remodeling the house and raising TAMUK rabbits and chickens. We are currently working to improve the back pasture for small livestock in the next year or so.

My husband was laid off from a 13 year position when the oil field plummeted a couple years ago. He works currently at a Air Conditioning Manufacturing Plant, but would love a better paying job if any of you have a spot for an extraordinary human being. I'm sure I am minorly partial but I set a super high bar for a spouse and would hire him into my health district if it were not against company policy to hire a spouse.

I work as the department director for a local Environmental Health Department. I have been in this position for 16 years. We are Registered Sanitarians that oversee retail food safety, commercial pool/spa safety, childcare safety as well as general public nuisances that could transmit disease to the public.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D

I found BYC through google searches hunting for ways to care for various chicken ailments that arose. It is rather difficult to diagnose chickens. One, because I am new to chickens and 2 no vet around treats chickens and if they did it is super expensive. So I am seeking the experience of other professionals.. Years ago in college i lived on a very similar forum for tropical fish and it is a gem to learn and share experiences with others.
