(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We had chickens when we moved to Alvord TX from Fort Worth about 55 years ago. I was just a kid, but loved tending our mixed bunch. We re-homed them when family moved back to the city. Then years later took my kids to the feed store and adopted a wee chick and named her Tango, she grew into a beautiful white Silky Bantam. Went back and adopted some more chicks and discovered what a great little mother Tango was. Chickens multiplied from there on, but started having predator issues and sadly had to make a difficult decision. We found a great farm with Great Pyrenees dogs and took Tango and the gang there.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? 0
(3) What breeds do you have? I would like to have Silkies again someday.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? They are very friendly and fearless creatures, fabulous pets, and the best eggs ever.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I’ve been a serious butterfly wrangler for 25 years. I grow their host plants and raise caterpillars and release butterflies for ministry, therapeutic and educational purposes. I’m into all pollinators and their conservation.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. Widowed 10 years ago, and continued raising the family- Have 3 of 4 grown kids, now all grown up and empty nesting with my very old and tiny Chihuahua BeBe. I’ve been a locksmith for 40 years now, and after Kevin passed 10.5 yrs ago I went to work at LISD as a district locksmith, maintaining locks on dozens of campuses across seven cities. It’s an amazing job, and at least 8 more years to retire, so good thing I love what I do. Many of our campuses have henhouses, this district is rooted in farming.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I came across BYC several months ago and couldn’t resist joining to keep myself in the know. Also to be delighted by, and to encourage chicken people until I can be a chickeneer once again myself.
