Hello! New here. I'm a late 20s girl living in the Midwest with my husband of 5 years and our two young sons. We just bought a 130 year old farmhouse that came with an old chicken coop, 12x14. It looks like it hasn't been used in years. Holes in the wooden siding, metal roof that's falling apart, no run, no roosts, no nesting boxes, not nearly enough ventilation... I could go on. So anyway, I have lots of work to do before spring. Planning on starting with around 10 hens and one roo, and letting chicken math take it from there.

I grew up raising chickens every few years for 4-H and FFA so I'm not totally new, but it's been about 12 years since I've taken care of chickens and I'll be the one 100% responsible for them this time. I'm planning on: replacing the metal roof, patching up the rotted walls, adding ventilation, building an 8x20 chicken run out of treated 4x4 posts and chicken wire/welded wire skirting, putting wood chips down in the run, and using pine shaving deep litter method for inside the coop. Like I said, it's been forever since I've had chickens and my parents did pretty much all of the planning and most of the work, so I'm going into this without much of an idea of what I'm doing. Hoping to at least get some fresh eggs and good garden compost out of it!

I admire you for taking on such a challenging project! My acreage and its century-old farmhouse also included a chicken coop that sounds very similar to yours.

While you have the gumption to tackle the project, I did not. I just allow sheep to shelter in the old coop and bought or made new housing for my chickens (ducks and geese).
