Hi Y'all,

I figured since I'm starting up a backyard poultry project for the first time ever I might as well join BYC and see what I can glean. Ever since I was in high school I've wanted to raise birds and now I finally have the chance to do it. Originally I mainly just wanted to raise ducks and maybe geese as I'm pretty interested in waterfowl, but my interests have broadened a lot. For this first project, I'm diving right in and I plan on having the 4 major types of poultry, ducks, geese, chickens, and turkeys. The chickens, ducks, and geese I already have on order from a hatchery and the turkeys I plan on purchasing from our local Southern States next week. We started clearing the brush from the spot we want to set up the runs in January, and we began building the first coop in March. The second coop we're going to construct from an old dog kennel. We (I say "we" because I still live with my parents right now) will have the turkeys in one coop and the chickens, etc. in the other coop. Here's a photo of the coop that we built. Welcome to Backyard Chickens. That is one sweet coop! You have some ambitious plants. If you go to "Other Backyard Poultry" you will find threads for geese, ducks, guineas, quail, peacocks, Emus. The folks on those threads can give you more information than I could. I just threw the Emus in to see if you were paying attention.

I have indeed seen some of the Emu threads on here. If that were to happen that would certainly be a long ways down the road though. Thought about it though. Ha! The breeds I'll be getting are Welsummers, Black Jersey Giants, Rouen and Pekin ducks, Toulouse and Chinese geese, and some Broad Breasted Bronze and White Turkeys. Out of all the chickens and ducks I plan to save half of them for eggs, all of the other birds are planned for the table. If it goes alright, next year I'll try some of the heritage/naturally mating turkeys, and I'll also try adding guinea fowl. Thanks for the welcome!
 
Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. Your coop looks great, and you're getting a nice mix of birds. I love the chocolate eggs of the Welsummers. In personal opinion, they are the prettiest eggs in the chicken world. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.
