What's a thread! I guess I introduce myself. I have had chickens before but it's been a while. would like to learn more. I am picking up some golden Comets tomorrow and am excited. They are 12 weeks old. I live on small acreage with a couple of horses and a couple of dairy goats and a couple of rabbits. I am into sustainable healthy living. I want to turn my little 4 acres into a (as much as possible) self sufficient hobby farm. I have an awesome garden this year. The goal is to get off the grid eventually, or if the grid goes down not to be bothered by it so much. My garden is organic. I believe strongly in the bartering system. Love to trade things and get good deals like everyone else. I love chickens as pets and egg producers. don't want to breed them just have 10 or so for my own needs and to trade eggs with my neighbors for other things. Looking for advice from experienced people, education, jokes, stories, funny pictures! Hopefully I can contribute to. I'll picture (s) when I figure it out. Not to computer saavy. Starr

Hi Starr, welcome to BYC!

You've come to the right place for all those things you like to do! First, if you haven't already, check out the Learning Center for some very good articles about all things chicken:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

There's a diy/self-sufficiency forum you might like:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/16177/diy-self-sufficiency

And a place to post about non-poultry animals (like goats and rabbits):
https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/22/other-pets-livestock

Once you get 20 posts, you can use the buy-sell-trade forum too:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/67/buy-sell-trade

That should give you enough reading to do for now, lol. If you have questions, feel free to ask.

Nice to have you here!

Welcome to BYC, Starr. Glad you decided to join our flock. Golden Comet is one of a number of labels under which some hatcheries market their Red Sex Links which are laying machines. You should get loads of large, brown eggs from those girls.) Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your Golden Comets.

Very nice to meet your Starr, hope you enjoy Backyard chickens as much as we do.
