Hi, my name is Amber and my family is planning to add chickens to our backyard. Our city bylaws allow up to 6 chickens but they must all remain in their coop and run and each chicken must have its own nesting box. So we are having a hard time finding a coop that will hold even 4 chickens comfortably and at a reasonable cost. We are looking for any ideas and joined BackYard Chickens in hopes of finding the perfect plan. Thank you.

A word of warning - ready made coops are not very good quality and can rarely accommodate the number of birds claimed. A pre-fab garden shed would work very well. The stipulation of every bird needing a nest is total tosh - but hey, if they are the laws, then such is life!

! Great to have you in our community! There are pros and cons to purchasing a manufactured coop...the cons outweigh the pros, in my opinion. Most seem to be not very durable over time, not very predator proof, and don't accommodate the number of birds the manufacturer claims. Still, if you need a small coop and you aren't very handy, it could be just the ticket. You might peruse the Coops Section in the link below for ideas - lots of ingenious coop ideas - some made from re-purposed materials.

As you have already received some good advice and links to some great starting points, I will just wish you all the best.

However, I did just want to add that another option could be to ‘convert a shed’. If you pop that into the search option there are lots of threads on the subject.

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock when they arrive, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out
