My name is Sharon Barrett, I spent my summers on my grandfathers farm when I was a kid and into my teen years. Even raised a few chickens once in my thirty's.

I am married to a great guy name Wylie (pronounced Why-lee. He is a retired Welder.

I live in Alberta, Canada. I am retired own some regular hens for eggs. Those I know how to care for. However, I am purchasing some Silkies and know absolutely nothing about the breed, other then they are beautiful. I am hoping for some egg's and maybe a few chicks now and again.

I have a small farm with seven Flemish Giant Rabbits, three pigs, one is going to be a pet. Then the 19 hens and one rooster. I also have two geese, and four turkeys.

My greatest hope is to make some friends here, learn about Silkies and if I get a new breed of chicken get help. I do a lot of research on the computer about breeds I believe I need to keep a file of some sort.

I'm glad you you joined BYC:welcome. I do not have any silkies personally but I heard the go broody a lot and are great mothers, I don't think they need any different care from other chickens.

Silkies are very popular but a more "fragile" breed than most. They have large crests & beards which obscure their vision - making them a great target for predators. They also get picked on by other breeds because they do not look like regular chickens. Hope Alberta won't be too severe for them.

There is a great thread called "J'est Another Day in Pair A Dice," started and narrated by a great lady Tara. She also lives in Alberta, and has hair sheep, llama, chickens, ducks, geese, and two genuine Australian cattle dogs. She has gotten her group successfully through all that Alberta weather has thrown at them.

You may also want to post at "Canadians, check in here." maybe some BYCers are living near you. Welcome to Backyard chickens.

PS you can check out the "Silkie thread," for more info on the breed.
