(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I had about 15 layers and 15 meat chickens about 4 years ago. My layers were free ranging at the time and did ok. I lost a couple to cars and for a while all was good until a raccoon got into my coop and killed most of them. The raccoon chewed right through the roof which was made of the corrugated plastic that allows light in. After that they wouldn't go back in the coop and the rest slowly disappeared. This time I have a large run with aviary netting and a stronger coop so they will hopefully be safer.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Right now it seems like I have adopted my neighbors chickens. They like to wander between my place and his. I do give them scratch grains when the weather is bad and they like to roost in my trees. I have yet to find where they are laying to at least get some eggs.
(3) What breeds do you have?
The 2 breeds I am getting are Rhode Island Red and Golden Buff.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
What I like about raising my own chickens is of course the fresh eggs and when I raise meat chickens the meat. The chickens are entertaining also. I like being able to give my friends and family eggs also.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
My other hobbies are gardening and I also teach motorcycle safety courses for Harley Davidson and Motorcycle Ohio.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I am married and have 2 dogs a golden retriever and a husky chow mix. We would like to raise a couple of cattle in the future.

I have browsed articles on BYC in the past but this time I decided to become a member and post any questions I may have.
