Hi Everyone, I'm 62 and just got my first 3 baby chicks last week! I have wanted chickens for years and finally able to . I love them so much I'm thinking of getting a Tom TURKEY to raise with my girls for protection, is this a good idea, or am I asking for trouble? Thanks for letting me join this family of chicken lovers lindy the chicky chick

Welcome to BYC.
:yesss: We are glad you joined this flock!
Jump right in and make yourself at home.

I think he will try to mate the girls...that will not be good.
Can you get a turkey hen for him?

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
It's never too late to start a great new hobby that you love.
I would not get the tom turkey. Once you get a little experience under your belt, you may want to adopt an adult human friendly rooster.

Hi Lindy! Congrats! I'm your age and same about chickens. If you get a turkey it has to be kept separate from chickens. Check out "turkey blackhead". I learned about this the other night.

Hello there and welcome to BYC! :frow

Congrats on the new chicks! You are in for a lot of fun and learning, they make wonderful stress relievers.

Turkeys are a class of Game Birds and you should never mix Game birds with chickens because each of these species carry "things" that can make the other sick or kill the other. So you might consider a rooster (only mix in a rooster when the hens are mature, 6+ months) or maybe even a Llama? Llama's make wonderful guard animals!

Good luck and welcome to our flock!
