HI..always wanted to have chickens. Not getting any younger so I thought I'd do it before retirement. Living in city, Springfield, Illinois. No next door neighbor on one side and a parking lot for the Middle School on the other. No rules, laws except for a nuisance regulation but I am worried about getting any roosters. I did get a Silkie so I guess I'll have to wait to see! I'm very excited..documenting and researching everything and having a lot of fun. Will probably need a lot of advice as I move forward. Not sure how many chickens I can have with the space I have.
I was a middle school teacher for 17 years and left due to stress for another job which is relatively stress free. Into all animals/wildlife and environmental conservation/issues.
I have a 140 sq ft shed converted to a coop with a 14'x3' dog run attached. Both open to the yard, 38' x 23' which will be predator proof and net covered for the day.I still am not sure how many chickens I should have. Have 9 chicks already, all different breeds and am expecting the last 6 IF I can figure out if that's OK and not too many!!!
