Hi I'm Kate! I live in Elma NY, right outside of Buffalo. The weather here can be tumultuous so I figured this is a nice way to connect with others who have similar weather. I've been reading the forums for a few months now but I'm in need of more specific chicken information now that my babies are in their "teenage" stage and instead of just reading my chicken care books I've decided to be more active on this page. Here are the questions that were recommended...
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? I am completely new to chickens. We bought 8 chickens the first week they hatched back on March 30th. They were living comfortably on our basement but we switched them over to their outside coop with lots of room to run and they love it (maybe not so much when it rains)
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? 8 hens, no roosters
(3) What breeds do you have? 2 rhode island red, 2 leghorn, 2 amberlink
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? I love learning about something new and watching them grow!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? My bachelors degree is in violin so I love music. I'm also a big reader and I love sewing as well. Gardening is life.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. I have 2 cats, several fish, and lots of plants. I'm a physician assistant thought I was a public school music teacher for a while. My boyfriend is frequently gone for work (He is a pilot for American Airlines) so I enjoy the company. We're hoping to get 2-3 alpacas next spring!
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
My ridiculous google questions regarding chicken rearing always turn up an article on this forum somewhere. I finally decided to join because I have more frequent questions and know no other chicken owners. I figured I could meet people through here or at least get first hand experience from chicken owners. I read a decent amount of chicken books but the answers aren't always specific enough. Can't wait to start posting!
